My name is Kirsten- Kir or Kiki to the ladies. I like drawing, storytelling, and drawing strangers on a daily basis. Especially the last one. I think it may make me a bit of a stalker.

But I'm a friendly stalker, I swear.

Feel free to note me with any questions you might have about art, colleges, etc! I'll be attending CalARTs for Character Animation starting in Fall 2013, so I like to pretend I can answer most people's questions. Plus I simply love to help in any way I can!

You have such a beautiful gallery~ And you're such a lucky duck for going to Calarts too! It's a fantastic college, you really deserve it~ I was wondering, could you give me any pointers for my portfolio? Was there anything specific that you think Calarts really likes? I'm trying to get my portfolio done for the 2014 entries and I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me out :)

Thank you! :)

-All of the portfolio requirements are up on their website. [link] Use that as your main guide.

-At least 75-100% of your portfolio will be life drawings. They want both short (10-30 seconds) and long (no more than 15-20 minute) poses. Like 15-30 drawings is fine. They don't want to see photo-realism or conservative drawings like the old masters, but drawings that exhibit knowledge of movement, form, understanding of the human body and the placement of weight, and some stylistic fun stuff (but don't get hung up on style!!) My accepted portfolio is here [link] , but PLEASE keep in mind that it's just a reference and you shouldn't try to replicate any accepted portfolios! The Review committee hates that, haha, and warns against it a lot.

-Sign yourself up for a figure drawing class pronto for the above!

-They love to see figure drawings of animals, too! Draw at the zoo!

-Learn to draw expressively, experimentally, and just in every way possible. Diversify your skill set! Draw people, animals, settings, play with perspective, do a bunch of different body types, ethnicities, etc etc etc. Don't limit yourself to furries or anime or any of the usual sub-cultures of art for teenagers. Hell, you can be a professional and a teenager! Get yourself out there, put a professional face on, and do stuff!

-Keep a sketchbook with you and draw every day. Draw from life. You can see my sketchbooks on my Tumblr, here, if you want some inspiration: zakeno.tumblr.com/tagged/sketchbook (sorry in advance for dumb pairing sketches) (I'm a dweeby teen despite the big talk )

-They hate seeing elves, unicorns, or the specific type of anime that you see on dA all the time. There's a lot of different 'anime' style so as long as you experiment you'll probably be fine. Just make sure your art represents your individuality.

Good luck!

Ur welcome! :)
Wow! Thank you so much on the feedback<33 I really appreciate it, you have no idea. Thank you so much for the links, I will definitely check all of those out :) I've already signed up for several figure drawing classes and I'll try not to get hung up on style haha x) But I definitely have some new inspiration because of this! You were such a big help, I cannot thank you enough!
